Woven Memories is an exploration of the female experience of nine pieces, crafted through a woven collage technique. In this piece, I’ve repurposed portraits of iconic old Hollywood actresses, weaving them into intricate patterns on A4 backing paper. This method not only reflects the aesthetic of traditional women’s work but also speaks to the complexity of memory - how time can obscure our recollections, evident in the way half of the images are hidden within the weave.
Through the interplay of visibility and obscurity, I invite viewers to reflect on the nuances of memory and identity. The quilt-like patterns serve as a metaphor for the stories we carry, with each actress representing a facet of the female experience. In engaging with these themes in Woven Memories, I hope to evoke a sense of nostalgia and encourage dialogue about how we perceive and remember the past.
